The 3 Things You Need to Do to Increase Your Volume Without Shouting

Recently, I worked with an NFL player in voice and presentation skills. During his 3rd session, he discovered the techniques for increasing his volume without shouting which I refer to as projection. He was stunned. It did not hurt his throat; it sounded better; and, his voice carried with more depth and breadth.

This is not the first professional athlete I’ve taught who has discovered the benefits of projecting the voice. Athletes, politicians, teachers, trainers, coaches, ministers, professional speakers, and even those who work in loud environments notice a tremendous difference when they learn the correct techniques for increasing their volume.

Unfortunately, if you are speaking loudly for long periods of time, you may also be suffering from vocal abuse which is characterized by chronic hoarseness, sore throats, or even loss of voice by the end of the day. And, if you frequent loud bars, projection is the only way to be heard without hurting your throat or your listeners’ ears!

In order to increase your volume properly, you will need to do 3 things first:

1. Breathe with the support of your diaphragm;

2. Use your chest cavity to power your sound; and

3. Find the optimum pitch of your speaking voice.

This technique is how you make the change from your habitual voice to your ‘real’ one. In the process, you will discover a sound that is deeper in pitch, warmer in quality and resonant. You will know when you have found it because you will not only hear the difference but you will feel your chest vibrating when you speak.

Once you have made this change, you will be able to increase your volume by means of your pelvic muscles instead of just your throat and voice box. Those pelvic muscles, sometimes referred to as your girdle of strength, will enable you to amplify your voice comfortably and with ease.

If you need to be able to speak with a larger volume of sound, stop shouting or yelling and learn how to project your voice instead. Your throat will thank you as well as your listeners!

Computer Sound Issues – How To Fix

1. Make sure your speakers are on and plugged into power.

As I’ve said in other articles, nothing can run without power. Make sure your speakers are plugged into a power outlet and that the outlet itself is working.

2. Make sure your speaker wires are in the right place.

Basic Speakers may just have the one wire, but If you have anything other than the bare minimum, there’s going to be 2, 3 or even 4. And if you don’t plug the right wires into the corresponding plugs, your system won’t work. The one that every system has is the plug for the main speakers and it’s pretty universal that green corresponds to these, and therefore should go into the green jack. If there aren’t matching colors, the speaker jack should have some sort of symbol depicting a speaker or headphones radiating sound, or something similar. If you have anything more than a two speaker system, for example a 5 speaker surround sound system, you will have more to deal with. The green will be for the front left and right speakers, but you will have two more wires that correspond to the front center speaker and the back left and back right speakers. On my Logitech system these are black and orange respectively. Now there is another jack for a microphone, which I have encountered as pink most of the time. But even without a color there should be a symbol depicting a microphone beside it.On a side note, most sound cards will have three plugs, one for the main speakers, another for the front center speaker, and one for a microphone. In order to have a surround sound computer system you usually need a higher end sound card that supports those extra back two. But don’t worry if you have a big speaker set and don’t have enough plugs for everything, the main speakers will still work, you’ll just have to upgrade Cards to get the surround sound experience. Now if all else fails and your cords and plugs are the wrong colors and there aren’t any symbols depicting which is which, a simple trial and error will eventually work, plug each wire into each plug, and one of them should eventually work.

3. Check windows volume control aren’t turned down or muted.

I know I’ve done this a thousand times. Turned on some music, heard nothing, had a mini-panic attack about my speakers being broken, and then realizing that the sound was just muted. To start with, make sure your speakers themselves are turned on. Many speakers will have a button that turns them on when they’re plugged in. They also may have a volume knob that you can turn to adjust the sound, make sure this isn’t turned all the way down. Most applications that involve sound (for example windows media player or itunes) will have a built in volume control somewhere in the interface. These can look like a slider or meter that shows a speaker with sound waves coming out to show what it is. Make sure this is turned up and the mute box (if it has one) is unchecked. Now Windows has a master volume control that sits near the clock on the bottom right corner of the screen. If you double click the speaker icon, then the sliders will come up. Make sure they are all turned up to how loud you want them. Now if all this doesn’t work, it could simply be your system is trying to play through the wrong device. If (in Vista) you right click your volume control and select “playback devices” from the list, you should open up a window that lets you change the device.

Or in XP, you can right click your volume control and go to “Adjust Audio Properties” and then go to the Audio tab.

Now if you have more than one device in this screen then select one, and click set default, and try your sound, and then the other, click set default, and try the sound. Click OK when you find the one that works.

4. Make sure your sound card drive is installed and working.

Now this step is a little bit more complex, though not awfully so. Sound cards have drivers that run them, so if there’s no driver, then your sound card won’t work. There sound be a driver CD that came with your computer with the right driver on it, so look for that and use the CD to install or re-install the driver. Failing that, most manufacturers will have the drivers to their products on their website so if you know the maker of your card you can simply go to the website and download it. Additionally if you know the model number of your card you can sometimes input that into Google or other search engine and it will take you to a site where you can download your driver. In order to find the model number of your card you have to look at the card and you have to take apart the computer to do so and I don’t really recommend that unless you really know what you’re doing.

Well that should be about it for basic sound troubleshooting. This should cover anything that’s not a real malfunction, hope it helps!

Building a Mini Electric Guitar Amp – Where to Start

Are you in the market for a mini electric guitar amp? Are you hesitant to shell out your hard earned dollars for a simple practice amp? If you consider yourself a real do it yourself kind of person, then maybe building your own miniature amp for your guitar would be your best solution. Here are some things to consider and how to get started.

There’s no denying that building your own mini amplifier is cheaper than purchasing one from your favorite music shop. Not only are the cost savings beneficial, but the reward of being able to say, “I made this,” is well worth your time. If you consider yourself to be somebody that is really good with their hands, then building your own mini electric guitar amp is the perfect project for you.

Building your amplifier can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. Most commercial miniature amplifiers sold are pretty stripped down when it comes to features. You will have your jacks for your electric guitar, headphones, and your volume control. In some of the higher end models, you will find the ability to control sound effects, reverb, and other features. It all depends on what you want.

Depending on the number of features, the cost to build your mini electric guitar amp can range from a couple of bucks and go up from there. Again, it’s all up to you. Be sure to take your budget into consideration as you embark on your project.

Don’t expect the kind of sound quality you would get from a commercial practice amp from your self built amplifier. Expect to hear some hums and other distorting sounds. This occurs mostly frequently when you turn up the volume of your amplifier too loud. Even at normal sound levels, your mini electric guitar amp may not get the commercial quality that you might be used to.

There are a variety of methods for building your own amplifier. There are an equal number of ways to obtain instructions for building your project too. A common method for finding instructions on building a do it yourself amplifier for your guitar can be found on video web sites. After reviewing some of these videos, you may come to the conclusion that the methods described are either poorly done or leave you with an amp that sounds terrible.

A better source for finding instructions on constructing your mini electric guitar amp is to visit your favorite search engine. Lookup search phrases like “mini guitar amp schematic.” Try substituting the word ’schematic’ with kit, do it yourself, DIY, plans, or project. You will be much more likely to find results that provide more detailed instructions for better sounding amps.

The main thing to keep in mind when tackling a project like this, is that this is a practice amp that you will be building. It won’t be designed to take to your next gig. Really put some thought into what features you want and then find a corresponding tutorial to match your needs!

iPhone 3G Review, 2009 – Phone Still Worth It?

Apple released the second generation of the iPhone back in July 08. It was an evolution rather than revolution from the first model. Featuring a GPS system and 3G functionality. Just as important was its price. It was half the price and twice the speed. But now 8 months later. Is the iPhone still the phone of choice?

Design

The user interface remained equal to the first model and it’s one of the biggest strengths for the iphone. Not only does it look gorgeous it’s also very functional. Just as functional is the outside. A very thin design that is almost all screen. On the side you’ll see two extremely functional buttons. Aninstant silencer and volume controls. The back shows the small lens Apple used for the camera and the apple logo. Just as on all the iPods.

Pros and cons

The iPhone is very easy to use. Especially for a smart phone. Another nice feature are the sensors for light, touch and movement. Meaning that keeping the device sideways will change the screen, having the device by your ear will turn off the screen and so on. Especially the first one is highly successful and a really nice touch. Proof is the fact that every other phone manufacturer has tried to copy the technique. Other obvious benefits of this phone is the great design and the software.

Unfortunately the software has it flaws as well. It’s really too heavy for the iphone’s hardware, resulting in a slower phone. With this said don’t try to install too many apps or multitask too much. The camera and GPS are also a big pain. The camera just isn’t of this time. I know why apple did this. They didn’t want to let the bigger lens of a better quality compromise the design. Plus adding the pain of millions of settings that might be a problem for less technical users. The GPS isn’t as functional as it could be because of the limited software. No voice navigation and such is to be expected. Also the GPS signal is sometimes great (outside) but inside might be extremely inaccurate.

Competition

The iPhone 3G is old in tech terms and is almost celebrating its one year birthday this summer. Of course Apple’s competitors aren’t just sitting around. Consumers now have a huge lists of alternatives including the Nokia N97, Sony Xperia, Samsung Pixon and more. Some of these other phones have better hardware and a way lower price tag. Although the design and software functionality is still Apple’s territory.

Conclusion

One year after release the iPhone remains a great phone. It is easy to use and has a great design. Biggest flaw is the slow hardware and small camera lens. It has many competitors which are worth a look but its biggest competitor is still to come. A new iPhone. So best would be to wait for the next iPhone coming this June. Hang in there. It will be worth the wait.

Disconnect From the World With Wireless Headphones

Wireless headphones are the ones where there is no cord to connect the set with source of music. Wireless headphones come with a transmitter base which plugs into the source of audios while the headphone set comes with a built in radio amplifier and a receiver. The nomenclature wireless is reserved for sets operating on Infrared while the cordless is for ones which operate on radio waves.

Infrared limits the distance one can move with wireless headphones. Usually, it not possible to move farther then a few yards away or go to another room, but there are some versions that allow whole house coverage. Cordless headphones allow a better range of movement. When you go to buy a wireless headphone, you should look for wireless headphones which have an on board volume control. This is helpful as you will not need to return to the base unit or audio source to control volume every time. Most wireless headphones are Dolby enabled. This technology is usually not available in simpler headphones which work on cords. Dolby technology gives far better sound quality then common headphones.

While looking for wireless headphones, it is recommended to try them before buying as they need to fit well on your head. Some stores will keep them in factory packaging and will not allow you to try on the wireless headphones. If you decide to purchase them online you, try to choose a name brand that you can trust. Most wireless headphones are adjustable and universal fitting.

Wireless headphones come in different models, which weigh different. Always look for models which are lighter as you may be wearing these headphones for longer period of time.

Most wireless headphones operate on batteries. Since you may use them for long period of time, using plain batteries will be quite expensive. While buying wireless headphone set, try and get sets of rechargeable batteries so that you can recharge them and reuse over a period of time. The better brands have rechargeable batteries and just need to be replaced in the base unit for charging.

Wireless headphones come in four styles:

o Earbud

o Sealed

o Canal

o Open

As a rule, ear bud design of wireless headphones is not the best design as it may cause loss of hearing over time. Open design lowers the sound quality a bit. When you are online or in a store looking for wireless headphones, remember these certain points:

o Wireless headphones which use Infrared are not affected by interference from electric appliances like Plasma TV.

o Headsets which operate on the 95 KHz infrared frequency work well in movie theatres.

o If you wish to use wireless headphones for plasma TV, buy one that operates on 2.3 MHZ.

o Although bigger plush earphones give better sound quality, they heat up faster then smaller ones so they may not be used for very long period of time.

o Most wireless headphones deliver better sound quality then the TV sets.

o Wireless headphones need to be kept clean and dry as possible. Watch were you take them, such as a Jacuzzi or sauna.

Wireless headphones are priced over a very large range. Although you may be tempted to buy the latest version, always look for the features you are getting and how you will use them. Although almost all types of wireless headphones are susceptible to some hiss, wherever the sound is digitally encoded first before transmitting, the voice quality is best.

Wireless headphones are extremely comfortable for people who may need to move a lot while listing to music or watching movies.
